01

The brief

Mrs. Powell's is a local bakery with an existing site and real commerce attached — menu, cart, checkout, the lot. The brief was a redesign: warmer, more inviting, better at telling the brand's story and showing off what they make.

Redesigns with live commerce underneath are harder than they look. A brochure site can be rebuilt and swapped over. Here, the checkout has to keep working throughout, product data has to survive intact, and any mistake isn't a cosmetic bug — it's an order that didn't happen.

02

The approach

I rebuilt the presentation layer around the products and the brand story while keeping the WooCommerce flow intact underneath. The visual work happens above the commerce, not through it.

Mobile-first, because bakery browsing is a phone activity. People look at baked goods while sitting somewhere else deciding whether to go. The photography and the menu had to work at that size first and scale up. Designing wide and squeezing down never survives the trip.

Built so their team can change promotions, menu items and seasonal specials without calling a developer. A bakery's site changes constantly by nature; if every change needs me, the site goes stale the moment the retainer ends.

03

The outcome

A warmer, more appetising shopfront that still sells — and a team that's not blocked on me for the routine updates a food business makes every week.

That last part is the one I care about most. A site the client can actually run is worth more to them than a prettier one they can't touch.
